Read First ------------- This document contains procedures and notes to upgrade OS to Windows XP for CF-72TCJUZxx (referred to as "CF-72mk3 series"). The following Windows XP drivers and applications are needed for upgrade. This Windows XP support information is evaluated with Windows (R) XP RTM (Build2600) as of 15th April 2002. This document is provided "AS IS" without guarantee of any kind, such as operation for example. * Please make sure of "6.1 Limitation on Windows XP" when you upgrade. * Please make backup copy of the important data on your PC. Panasonic does not guarantee if you crush your operating environment or data. * Please uncheck the box "Hide file extensions for known file types" at "folder options". Windows98 [Start]-[Settings]-[Folder Options] WindowsNT [Start]-[Settings]-[Control Panel]-View-Options Windows2000 [Start]-[Settings]-[Control Panel]-[Folder Options] WindowsXP [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Appearance and Themes]- [Folder Options] * Please logon as an administrator for upgrade from Windows NT or Windows 2000. * Please logon as an administrator for setting options on Windows XP. * Evaluated on Windows XP RTM: Build 2600 (English) * Evaluated without any peripherals * Evaluated after setting BIOS as [Get Default Values] at [Exit] menu, in Setup Utility 2. How to upgrade (summary) --------------------------- These are brief list of this document contents. 3. Prepare for Windows XP install Prepare Recovery CD and Backup Disk to recover PC as factory default Prepare drivers and applications for Windows XP Backup private files 4. Prepare for Windows XP install --------------------------------- 3.1 Needs to install -------------------- Please prepare the followings before install Windows XP. * CF-72mk3 series notebook computer with AC adapter * Backup Disk (Refer to Operating Instructions Manual) * CF-72mk3 series Windows XP drivers and applications (Please download them to media such as FD for example) * Windows XP Professional CD-ROM Windows XP Professional Full Package or Upgrade Package (Installing Windows XP as clean install, "Full Package" is needed) * CF-72mk3 series Product Recovery CD-ROM * Backup data of private files 4. Install Windows XP --------------------- 4.1. 2 kinds of installation ---------------------------- There is two ways for installing Windows XP. * Upgrade Windows 98/NT/2000 to Windows XP This is replacing Windows 98/NT/2000 with Windows XP. If you use some application that supports both Windows, you can keep using it. * Clean install Windows XP This is installing Windows XP after formatting Hard Disk. Windows XP Full Package is needed. * Panasonic doesn't recommend to install Windows XP newly on Windows 98/NT/2000. That may cause problems on application level. 4.2. Upgrade install -------------------- This is replacing Windows 98/NT/2000 with Windows XP. If you use some application that supports both Windows, you can keep using it. 4.2.1 Before Upgrade -------------------- * In the case of upgrade install, firstly uninstall applications and drivers which don't support Windows XP or have problem during install. Please uninstall applications which don't support Windows XP. At Factory Default, re-installed by Product Recovery CD, you should uninstall the following drivers and applications before install. # uninstall at [Add/Remove Programs] Close applications first to uninstall. Select "No to All" or "Yes to All" at "Remove Shared File?" window during uninstall. * DMI Viewer For Windows NT users: After uninstall DMI Viewer, you rarely see "DMI Viewer" at [Add/Remove Programs] list, but go ahead because uninstall has already completed. * Touchpad/Touchscreen For Windows 98 users: After uninstall and reboot, when "Add New Hardware Wizard" runs, please click [cancel] button. * Card Executive 2.0 for NT (only for NT users) * APM 2.0 for NT (only for NT users) * YAMAHA SoftSynthesizer S-YXG50 (only for NT users) # uninstall at [Start] menu * Create Backup DISK [Note] After upgrade Windows XP, you cannot create the Backup Disk. Please make sure you have the Backup Disk before upgrade. How to delete at [Start] menu: For Windows 98 users 1) Select [Start]-[Settings]-[Taskbar & Start Menu] 2) Select [Start Menu Programs] 3) Click [Advanced] 4) Select [Programs]-[Panasonic]-[Create Backup Disk], then click [Delete] For Windows NT users 1) run Explorer 2) Select "C:\WinNT\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\ Panasonic\Create Backup Disk" then delete by right click. For Windows 2000 users 1) Select [Start]-[Settings]-[Taskbar & Start Menu] 2) Select [Advanced] 3) Click [Advanced] 3) Select [All Users]-[Start Menu]-[Programs]-[Panasonic]- [Create Backup Disks], then delete by right click. # Others * SigmaTel driver (only for NT users) 1) Open [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Multimedia] 2) Select [Audio Devices]-[Audio for AC'97 Audio Ctrlr : SigmaTel Codec Driver] at [Devices] 3) Click [Remove] 4) Follow the message to uninstall then reboot * Easy CD Creator Ver4.xx (Option) 1) Select [Start]-[Programs]-[Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4] -[Uninstall] 2) Follow the message 3) Select [Start]-[Programs]-[Adaptec DirectCD]-[unInstall DirectCD] 4) Click [Yes] for question to delete 5) Click [No to All] for "Remove Shared File?" question 6) When uninstall completely, click [OK] 7) Reboot Please reboot after uninstall. 4.2.2 How to install for "upgrade install" ------------------------------------------ 1) Put Windows XP Professional CD-ROM into CD-ROM drive after boot OS. 2) CD-ROM will be loaded automatically. Click [Install Windows XP] at Windows XP Setup Wizard. 3) As Upgrade(Recommended) install, click [Next]. 4) Follow the messages to install. Select [No, skip this step and continue installing Windows] at [Get Updated Setup Files]. Save "Upgrade Report" if you need it. (It may take more time than the message "Setup will complete in approximately: xx minutes".) 5) After booting Windows XP, go to "5.Setting Windows XP". In case of changing display setting after Windows XP boot-up, open display Properties and set Screen resolution as 1024x768 at [Setting] tab. 4.3 Clean Install ----------------- You need Windows XP Full Package for this install. If you apply Upgrade Package, setup program cannot find the previous version Windows and stops setup. 4.3.1 How to install for "clean install" ---------------------------------------- 1) Shut down the Windows, then power on. 2) During the message "Press to enter SETUP", press [F2]. 3) At [Boot] menu, move [CD Drive] to the top of the list. 4) Put Windows XP Professional Full Package CD-ROM. 5) At [Exit] menu, select [Save Values & Exit]. Select [Yes] at [Setup Confirmation], then reboot, 6) Press any key at "Press any key to boot from CD". 7) Follow the messages to do "clan install". 8) After booting Windows XP, go to "5.Setting Windows XP". 5. Setting Windows XP --------------------- 5.1. Preparing -------------- After boot Windows XP, copy all Windows XP drivers and applications for CF-72mk3 series to a folder in C drive. 5.2. Install drivers -------------------- 5.2.1 Install OS INF file (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) --------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Run Explorer to go to the folder "OS INF file" copied to. 2) Double click setup.exe. 3) Follow the message then reboot. 5.2.2 Install Hotkey driver --------------------------- 1) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[System]. 2) Click [Device Manager] at [Hardware] tab. For upgrade from Windows 98/NT and clean install 3) Double click [Other Devices]-[Unknown device]. Click [Reinstall Driver] at [General] tab. 4) Select [Install from a list of specific location(Advanced)], then click [Next]. 5) Select [Search for the best driver in these locations]. Input Hotkey driver path at [Include this location in the search:]. Click [Next]. 6) After [Completing the Hardware Update Wizard], click [Finish]-[Close] then reboot. (Reboot takes some time rarely.) 7) After reboot, run Explorer to go to the folder Hotkey driver. Double click addhkey.bat. For upgrade from Windows 2000 3) Double click [System devices]-[Hotkey Driver for Panasonic Notebook]. Click [Update Driver] at [Driver] tab. 4) Select [Install from a list of specific location(Advanced)]. Click [Next]. 5) Select [Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.]. Click [Next]. 6) Click [Have Disk]. Input Hotkey driver path at [Copy manufacturer's files from:]. Click [OK]. 7) Select [Hotkey Driver for Panasonic Notebook] among the models. Click [Next]. 8) After [Completing the Hardware Update Wizard], click [Finish]-[Close], then reboot. (Reboot takes some time rarely.) 9) After reboot, run Explorer to go to the folder Hotkey driver copied to. Double click addhkey.bat. 5.2.3. Change Built-in LAN driver (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[System]. 2) Click [Device Manager] at [Hardware] tab. 3) Double click [Network Adapters]-[Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC] or [Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC #2]. Click [Driver]->[Update Driver]. 4) Select [Install from a list of specific location(Advanced)]. Click [Next]. 5) Select [Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.]. Click [Next]. 6) Click [Have Disk], and specify the folder path of LAN driver at [Copy manufacturer's files from:] field. Click [OK]. 7) Select [Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC] among network adapters. Click [Next]. 8) After [Completing the Hardware Update Wizard], click [Finish]-[Close], then reboot. 5.2.4. Install Modem driver (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[System]. 2) Click [Device Manager] at [Hardware] tab. 3) Double click [Modems]-[Lucent Win Modem] or [Lucent Win Modem #2]. Click [Driver]->[Update Driver]. 4) Select [Install from a list of specific location(Advanced)]. Click [Next]. 5) Select [Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.]. Click [Next]. 6) Click [Have Disk], and specify the folder path of Modem driver at [Copy manufacturer's files from:] field. Click [OK]. 7) Select [Lucent Win Modem] among Models. Click [Next]. 8) When [... has not passed Windows Logo testing..] is displayed, go ahead by clicking [Continue Anyway]. 9) After [Completing the Hardware Update Wizard], click [Finish]-[Close], then reboot. 5.2.5. Install Touchpad/Touchscreen driver (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[System]. 2) Click [Device Manger] at [Hardware] tab. 3) Double click [Mice and other pointing devices]-[PS/2 Compatible Mouse], and Click [Update Driver] at [Driver] tab. 4) Select [Install from a list of specific location(Advanced)], and Click [Next]. 5) Select [Don't search, I will choose the driver to install.], and click [Next]. 6) Click [Have Disk], and specify the folder path of Touchpad/Touchscreen driver at [Copy manufacturer's files from:] field. Click [OK]. 7) Select [touchpad/touchscreen] (upper one). click [Next]. 8) When [... has not passed Windows Logo testing..] is displayed, go ahead by clicking [Continue Anyway]. 9) After [Completing the Hardware Update Wizard], click [Finish]-[Close], then reboot. 10) After reboot, click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Printers and Other Hardware] -[Mouse]. Click [Touchscreen]-[Calibration] to calibrate. 5.2.6. Install Sound driver (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[System]. 2) Click [Device Manger] at [Hardware] tab. 3) For Windows98/NT upgrade install and clean install: Double click [Sound, video and game controllers]-[Intel(r) 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio Controller]. For Windows 2000 upgrade install: Double click [Sound, video and game controllers]-[Intel(r) AC'97 Audio Controller - SigmaTel Codec]. Then click [Update Driver] at [Driver] tab. 4) Select [Install from a list of specific location(Advanced)], and Click [Next]. 5) Select [Don't search, I will choose the driver to install.], and click [Next]. 6) Click [Have Disk], and specify the folder path of Sound driver at [Copy manufacturer's files from:] field. Click [OK]. 7) Select [Intel(r) AC'97 Audio Controller - SigmaTel Codec] (upper one). click [Next]. 8) After [Completing the Hardware Update Wizard], click [Finish]-[Close], then reboot. 5.2.7. Install Video driver (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Run Explorer to go to the folder "Video driver" copied to. 2) Double click setup.exe. 3) Follow the message then reboot. When overwrite question, select [Yes]. 4) When [... has not passed Windows Logo testing..] is displayed, go ahead by clicking [Continue Anyway]. 5) After completing install, click [Finish]-[Close] and reboot. 6) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[Power Options]. Check [Enables Hibernate] at [Hibernate] tab. (In case of upgrade from Windows 2000, it is already checked.) After this operation, standby and Hibernation are enabled. 5.3. Install applications ------------------------- 5.3.1. Install Hotkey Service (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Run Explorer to go to the folder "Hotkey Service" copied to. 2) Double click setup.exe. 3) Follow the message then reboot. 5.3.2. Install DMI Viewer (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Run Explorer to go to the folder "DMI Viewer" copied to. 2) Double click setup.exe. 3) Follow the message then reboot. 5.4. Other settings ------------------- 5.4.1. Install p3.sys (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[System]. 2) Click [Device Manger] at [Hardware] tab. 3) Double click [Processors]-[Intel(R) Pentium(R)III...]. Click [Driver Details...] at [Driver] tab. 4) In case [Driver files:] is [...System32\DRIVERS\processr.sys], click [OK], then click [Update Driver...]. In case [Driver files:] is [C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\p3.sys], click [OK] and skip below procedure (5-8). 5) Select [Install from a list or ...]. Click [Next]. 6) Select [Don't search. I will choose...]. Click [Next]. 7) Uncheck [Show compatible hardware]. Select [Manufacturer]-[Intel]. Make sure [Model] is [Intel Pentium III Processor]. Click [Next]. 8) After completing message, click [Finish]-[Close], then reboot. 5.4.1. Setting Secondary IDE Channel (For Windows98/2000/NT upgrade install and clean install) ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Click [Start]-[Control Panel]-[Performance and Maintenance]-[System]. 2) Click [Device Manager] at [Hardware] tab. 3) Double click [IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers]-[Secondary IDE Channel] 4) In case [Device0]-[Transfer Mode] is [PIO Only] at [Advanced Settings] tab, change it to [DMA if available]. 6. Note / Restrictions ---------------------- 6.1. Restrictions of Windows XP ------------------------------- * IrDA communication does not work after resuming from Stand-by or Hibernation mode. * While using Fast User Switching function, PC rarely has problem. In case of that, please log off once, then log on. 6.2.
